ARCHER
Carter took a seat at the small table in the kitchen, placing his sunglasses in front of him. âYouâre either incredibly stupid or stupidly brave. I havenât decided which one yet.â
I wound the towel Iâd grabbed on the way back to the pool house around my waist, then pulled on a T-shirt that I found on the back of the couch. Once I was satisfied I wouldnât drip all over the floor, I sat down in the other chair.
âIâm neither. There are things I canât talk about, but William knows about whatâs going on, and he doesnât mind.â
âWhich is what sets off all my warning bells. Gunner spoke to William who for some reason didnât sound upset. And there was no cursing, no threats of firing us.â Leaning back in his chair, he studied me. âYou know weâll figure out eventually whatâs going on, right? You might as well save us the time and tell us what the fuck happened.â
Holding up my hands, I shook my head. âI canât talk about it. I signed a nondisclosure, remember?â
Studying me a moment longer, Carter narrowed his eyes at me. âYouâre on the next flight out of here. But first weâre talking to William.â He got up and started the coffee machine. âGet dressed. You have five minutes.â
Saluting him, I took a quick shower and pulled on fresh clothes.
Carter handed me a mug filled with coffee when I came back out, and I took it gratefully. âCan I ask for one thing?â
Carter took a sip from his own cup, then tilted his head slightly.
âI need one more night. Send me on the first flight tomorrow morning, but give me time to say goodbye,â I said.
âYouâre in so much shit, yet youâre still digging yourself deeper.â
âLook, I know I did the wrong thing by sleeping with a client. But Thea is so much more than just a hookup. If keeping my job means not having her in my life anymore, then consider this my resignation.â
I held my breath, hating that it had come to this. But no matter how much I loved what I did, Iâd realized that a life without Thea wasnât a life at all.
âI donât understand why youâd give up your future just to get laid, but whatever.â He finished the last of his coffee and set the empty mug in the sink. âIâll put you on an early flight tomorrow morning.â He shook his head, the puzzlement over the situation clear on his face. âSince William has no problem with you sleeping with his wife, the only thing that will happen is that youâre off the job. No need to get dramatic and quit.â
Taking a deep breath in, I clenched my fists. âIâm not trying to get laid, donât ever say that about Thea again. Iâve loved her for a long time. And while it might have been a silly crush when I was a teenager, itâs so much more now.â
âYou could have made your life so much easier by just staying away.
